Museum of National History - The Modern Collection

Hillerød, Denmark

2012

This project replaces an existing exhibition installation from 1992, and involves the restoration and furnishing of 800sm of historic interiors used for exhibiting The Modern Collection – a collection of portraits, busts, and period furniture.  Located in the King’s Wing of spectacular Frederiksborg Castle, architect Ferdinand Meldahl’s original castle interiors are characterized by ornate plaster ceilings.

Our primary design objective was to re-establish the essential character and proportioning of the spaces, which had been undermined by the previous installation, while inserting new freestanding partitions, display podiums and cases  .  This goal is achieved, in part, by minimizing the scope and number of new components, and expressing these as highly refined and meticulously detailed interventions from our time.
