The El Cortez Hotel in San Diego, constructed in 1927 on Cortez Hill, is one of the city's prime historical landmarks. This project for the developer/owner comprised both the conversion of the original hotel tower and an adjacent 1950's annex building into modern apartments.
While the original hotel tower exterior was respectfully restored to its original grandeur, its interiors were altered significantly to accommodate the new use. The annex building was thoroughly transformed in harmony with the building's original mid-century aesthetics, and an extra story was added to provide dramatic penthouse units with views over the city. Materials and finishes were selected to establish aesthetic affinity with the original hotel tower.
Extensive courtyard and other common areas were planned between the two structures to integrate the project into a cohesive residential community.
